Hi folks, am looking for your thoughts on whether a flat roof is easy enough to rebuild for a competent DIYer?

 

The flat felt roof on the garage is leaking and I think there are spots where the boards under the felt are rotten (its been plasterboarded inside which makes it difficult to see).

 

Having watched Youtube videos and looked at felt manufacturers documentation, it would seem fairly straightforward to:

• rip up the old felt and boards and skip it.
• Lay new boards (tempted to add a little extra fall to the roof too as its rather flat and pools water)
• Fit torch-on underlay and felt.

Its a two car (long thin) garage.

 

Has anybody done similar? Is it as straightforward as it looks and where did you encounter problems?

should be a reasonable task on a warm day.

You might like to look at a rubber sheet roof kit.
They are all one piece, kits for sheds / lean-to's etc.

I've heard good reports and will do this on mine in the summer.

I think you mean EPDM. It's good stuff. Google EPDM kit

The second time, I decided to use corrugated iron.

 

It is noisy when the rain is heavy.

I would fibreglass it myself much easier and harder wearing and lasts better. The boards underneath will be completely rotten.

At my previous house I replaced the garage asbestos roof with polycarbonate sheets, big mistake because the garage was like an oven, I solved it partially  by painting it with solar reflective paint.

 

I have replaced my 13ft by 10 ft workshop roof about a year ago using OSB board, 50mm celotex and then another layer of OSB board, I have a fall of 6 inches from front to back. I used a felt underlay and top sheet which has worked well,able no leaks or condensation and the internal temperature remains stable

Thanks for the replies all, I looked up EPDM and it looks a bit simpler than the torch on stuff. I also discovered firrings, pre cut wedges designed specially for creating fall on flat rooves. 

 

Looks like I'll need OSB, firring wedges, an EPDM kit and some new fascias and soffits as they are starting to go rotten too. Initial estimates from browsing websites looks like £1k materials all in. Just need to find some mug to help me

I built mine from new tanalised 4×2 and used 8ft x 4ft pallets 16×9 ft with a box profile roof

I have done 4 roofs including 2 garages and a shed with EPDM from "rubber4roofs" you just put in the dimensions and they calculate the kit quantities including adhesive and edging, easy to do diy and I would highly recommend them.

Osb the roof and buy a cure-it fibre glass system. It's really good. Where I work all the roofers love it.
