I'm interested to know if the iron used in commonly available rings is plain cast iron or ductile cast iron.  I know cast iron rings work but there are different types and I'm interested in the differences and what is available to us.

Also the factory fitted top rings were cast iron but with chrome on the outside face of the rings.  Why did the BL/AustinRover use these if plain cast iron is sufficient?  Particularly as chrome rings are harder to bed in.

The OEM rings were plain CI (not ductile) and there was a short period where the top ring was chrome faced, but for many years from the early 70's to the end, these were plain rings for a quick and easy bed in and less warranty claims from glazing.

They forgot to update their Repair Operation Manual as the 1980 one (applicable to models from March 1976) I have shows all the small bore top rings to be "plain, chrome faced" and the 1275 ones to be "internally chamfered chrome".

It wouldn't surprise me if that wasn't updated at that time.

I built a good 998 engine a few years ago for my Grandson. I bored it to +0.080" which gave a capacity of 1060 cc. I used Hastings flat-top pistons, a Cooper 'S' 510 cam (my Grandson found it in a box of cams I have!), a 12G295 gas-flowed head, an HS4 on a Howley alloy manifold, a 3-into-1 ex. manifold with RC40 exhaust and a few other nice bits. It was great to drive on the roads, gave 65 bhp at around 5700 rpm and had a 3.2:1 FDR.

After selling it about 7 years ago my Grandson has traced it to the guy to whom he sold it to and has just bought it back. I have to go to Scotland to collect it in a few weeks, bring it back to Cambridgeshire, re-restore it (it needs some work as it has been neglected, but has done very few miles) then ship it to Vancouver where he is now living. We will be putting it on 10" wheels and may fit Mk.1 rear lights.

This is the car which was featured on the BBC 1 TV show 'Car Booty' when we were raising money to build it in the first place.

This spec sounds great. When my 850 (eventually) dies I'd definitely be looking to build something very similar thanks for details of the build

I've recently stripped a 1984 998 A+ which hasn't been apart since about 1984 and that has chrome top rings.
