Mot Failed.. Where Should I Start

Best Answer richmondclassicsnorthwales , 29 April 2019 - 05:30 PM

Hi

Well, not too bad, normal for a Mini

Crack on and fix the front ball joints and track rod ends in one hit. I sell a kit for that and this is it below. Same parts as supplied by MiniSpares

https://www.richmond...60838&id=751423

Rear wheel bearings should take some grease, always overlooked, so pop off the grease caps and get some grease in. Pop the cap, remove the split pins and unscrew the nuts. Pop some grease on the bearings and roll them by hand to get the grease circulated, not too much grease !.

Fog lamp will be connections, so check the bulb first for filament, then check the electrical connections and importantly the earth. Don't forget your lights need to be on before checking the leads / connections for the fog lamp

Afternoons work should see you done. I would have thought the garage would have adjusted the headlamps on the test unless the adjusters are seized up. Not the biggest of jobs, a minute each if that under the beam check. Have a look at these yourself to see if they are seized. If not, leave off the headlamp rims and I am sure they would aim these Free of charge. Use a bit of WD40 if a bit stiff

Last year passed first time in 18 years, no advisories.... this year not so lucky!!!

Where do I start with this list of problems and what is going to cause me the most problems/is there anything I should just let a proper mechanic do...
I have tools and am willing to take on most jobs but I don’t have any “specialist” tools if that makes sense

Help! I want this mini back on the road asap

These are jobs you should be able to tackle yourself  based on your previous build thread, although you may need a ball joint separator and socket to fit the swivel joints. There are some useful threads on here and the trusty haynes manual is always your friend.

Good luck

As above really..

You should be able to tackle theses jobs easily within a day if not just a couple of hours... Presuming you're OK with spanners...

Track rod ends are easy enough they do just wind off the arms, don't turn the locking nut more than 1-2 threads though as the tracking will be way out, or sort them then take it to have tracking sorted.

Ball joints are easy enough to replace if you have a seperator, if not then a bloody big hammer usually dislodges them from their taper, but don't go hitting the balljoint thread itself, but the housing...

Not expensive or hard jobs to do to be honest... those are the main failure...

The advisories should be done for the next MoT especially the wheel bearings as they will wear and fail if not sorted soon...

Remove the hubs from the front then do the ball joints and repack/grease the bearings or replace upto you. Track rod ends are easy that’s not too bad to be fair.
Rear bearings are easy too just remember one side undoes the opposite way. Haines manual and a relaxed day of work.

it was only half a mile and the mechanic tightened a few bits up for me before I went

he did say id been lucky to get there without both the wheels ending up pointing in different directions!

they had 2 old minis themselves so i trusted them to not let me die haha

Well done, that's good news.  What did you do about the front wheel bearings?

Well!....
Messaged a couple of people on eBay within 50ish miles of where I live asking if I could come and collect.. no reply
Got up bright and early yesterday, drove 2 hours to potters bar Minispares... closed as it was bank holiday!
Tail between my legs started driving back and got a message on from someone on eBay saying I could come and collect.
Spent yesterday afternoon replacing both front wheel bearings, 3 of the races went in lovely with a few taps.. the final one.. stuck... 2 hours of tapping, bashing and begging still stuck...
Up 7am today to go get a local garage to press the race I for me in 10 seconds...

Mot tester said there is still some play in one of the front bearings but very minor so not sure what I’ve done wrong there....

That was a bit hectic!

As cian says the hub may be getting worn if the outer races are dropping in to it.  You need to be aware of this as if the outer race spins it'll finish the hub off.  Maybe worth budgeting for some new hubs and Timken bearings down the line.

I think long term I need to budget for new hubs and driveshafts as everything looks like it’s had a pretty hard life...
weirdly I had ball bearings one side and tapered the other...
both tapered now, hopefully will cause no issues this summer and can put it on the winter list to replace with quality parts. For now I just want to be road legal and drivable as I hate the idea of being off the road in the summer

Yeah I know what you mean.  I'm engine-less at the moment.
