So i align the drift as per the red line to push the seal out?

still the problem is that the seal seems glued on to the case somehow

nope more like this.

Im trying to change the diff side cover oil seals (ADU5738) but the current ones just wont come off! Its like they are made of some super strong, firm synthetic rubber or something and they are fused to the case or something. the spring that sits inside the seal has already come off.

Tried prying it out with a flathead screwdriver - warped the screwdriver and tore through the seal

tried a box cutter along the rim - didnt achieve anything

eventually i used a screwdriver from the rear and just pushed as hard as i could. it tore through the rubber, so i just kept pushing, and used my fingers to pull the stretched rubber at the other end. all that did was tear the seal leaving a thing layer stuck hard to the metal, as well as bit of the seal on the inner side of the lip stuck in place:

any suggestions on how to remove the remaining bits of the seal? its really stuck on there.

drift it out from the inside.

soaking it in hot water may also help.

as in whack it out with a punch and hammer? but isnt that metal lip thing part of the diff cover? the new oil seal doesnt have any metal washer like thing (though in fairness its also black not red).

no you dont whack it out. you work your way around it. and you have a fair few mm to get it going before you need to think about a support.

I think my diff cover is somehow different from the standard, with oil seals that were not meant to be replaced. It looks a little different from the covers listed on minispares, and the oil seal also looks a little different from the replacement I got. Here's a pic of the old oil seal in the right hand diff cover, as well as a replacement seal next to it:

Here's a closeup at a different angle. See how the inner part of the seal is still stuck to the walls of the diff cover behind a metal lip.:

In this pic i've used a pick to point out the metal lip that is giving me grief:

If the seal is indeed not meant to be replaced, then i've basically buggered it and need to get new diff covers  :ohno:

For your information the standard side plate (A+ gearbox) oil seal is 1.88 inch or 47.8mm in diameter. Your side plates appear to have a wider diameter.

what do you mean? the ones i ordered are the ADU5738 from minispares.

the point is that dark red oil seal looks very different from what i have and feels like its fused to the body of the diff cover.

like I said there are two different sizes. depending on what your build is. and all seals are replaceable. just some are harder than others to get in or out.

You have got to support it on the face marked BORE, and then put a 'drift' between the words Metal Case and Primary Lip, and moving the drift 30 degrees each time, go round the seal tapping it out.

When the Metal Case comes level with the BORE, you have to find another way of supporting it.

I have made a piece of steel water pipe into my drift by shaving it off at an angle, so that it looks something like a scoop.
