So i align the drift as per the red line to push the seal out?

still the problem is that the seal seems glued on to the case somehow

nope more like this.

It's probably the rubber covering that's welded itself to the casing...

In the example above, you'd be coming in at 10 to 4 if that make sense ! Remember, the shaft won't be there to get in the way..

If it's really stuck, a bit of time with a dremel will sort it

While it maybe the photo, it looks distorted and no longer round.

Never done one before but what about sticking it in the oven when the mrs goes out incase it is glued or fit with bearing fit, get it warm and try again, or heat it with a torch maybe?

think its just the photo. i didnt have any oil leaking from the diff covers at all. the seals were still in good condition until i tried to remove them!

already tried this... hit it hard with a hammer and drift. didnt budge. is the entire area in yellow supposed to come out with the oil seal?

Yes, it is part of the oil seal.

As it shows in the picture, the outside diameter is just larger than the housing,  and all that is holding it in is rubber round the outside.

We engineers have a saying   "If it ain't bust, don't fix it ".

And in the next breath, we extole 'planned maintenance'.

So you can't win but were correct to replace the seal.

which means i will rest the drift against the area in yellow and hit with a hammer right?

okay i'll try warming it up in the oven then give it a good whack after. hopefully that gets it out.

Yep - face down on the bench, hit it, move the punch along a bit, hit it again to try and walk the seal out. Once you've got it moving it should be easier to get it out..

It may be it's got peened over by pot joint removal. You can see from Nick's diagram the ring of steel that you need to get the better of. If it won't drift you might have to collapse it. Grab the annular with some miles and try and bend it out. It may bend the cylindrical part out with it. Even if it doesn't it'll make it easier to get a small screwdriver down the back.

size wise they do line up when i put the new one on top of the old, but the old seal does look more like the AHU1082 doesn't it?

okay finally got them both out. Just hard to hit it really hard with a hammer and drift and they both eventually came out. thanks for the guidance.
