Have I interpreted the tax exemption rules correctly in that my 1979 classic registered in August is not actually tax exempt until April 2020? So another 8 months of paying tax ?

that's how i understand it - the car needs to be 40 years old at 1st of January in order to qualify for tax exemption from April 1st of that year

I thought so, just in this instance it's nearer a 41 year rolling exemption.

Unless the build date is earlier, sadly you need to get a Heritage certificate to prove that.
That costs from memory £43.

You can ask the British Motor Museum https://www.britishm...mation-services
one question for £6.
My van is registered in August 1979 so thought it was worth six quid to see if I could save a years tax. Alas it was manufactured in May 1979 so like yours will be virtually 41 years old before being exempt from tax.
