Have you considered one of the smaller lightweight alternators as a replacement?

Thanks for your help and advise, found this high tech gismo at our local market hardwear stall worked fine. Tried load pic but file was to large! It’s 21 mm socket like a bike spanner with chamfered body, price 2,25 euro

Out of interest, what socket were you trying to use? I've not yet had an issue with a 3/8 socket and extension as Steve said so I'm intrigued to know.
