Are all A series camshafts interchangeable (disregarding oil pump drive type)? 

 

I thought they were but I've been looking at camshaft bearings at Minispares and they say "Minis have one of two sizes of cam bearings; 850/998/1100cc blocks use use AEC3046 which has one bearing smaller in diameter than 1275cc, see AEC3063"

 

Do they mean diameter or rather width?

yes camshafts are interchangeable.

So the journal diameters aren't different.  Why does the small bore engine need different bearings to the big bore engines?

IIRC the pump end bearing is shorter as the pump face is machined differently.
