I appear to have only 1 thou end float on standard thrust washers .. is this a problem and if so how is it overcome? Thanks

Yeah that's tight,
Whip the thrusts out and give the backs a rub on wet and dry with some wd40 in case any of the stamping is sitting proud and try the again
Also swap the bottoms round in case you have a thick an thin one, basically match them to thickness.
If they are already +3 thou ones from regrinding, you can swap in half a set of std ones to get about an extra 1.5 thou, otherwise it's skim a little off the back if them on a surface grinder

Just lightly linish the steel back faces of one pair and keep checking until you have just over 0.002".
