If the flywheel hit the floor make sure it hasn't dislodged the ring gear.
I've had one where the ring gear moved a couple of mm off the shoulder when the flywheel jumped off and hit the floor.

Lump hammer 1, flywheel 0  :-)
OMG when the flywheel finally let go it shot about a foot off the engine just as well I was standing to the side otherwise I'd be in A&E with broken toes

Oh yeah, watch out, that can happen.
Thanks for the warning as it did hit the floor with some force so that may be a problem. If I stick a photo up would it be obvious if it's moved, or if not is there a way to check
Cheers

It's easy enough to spot when you look for it. Here's the flywheel mentioned. The gap shouldn't be there.

Surely that ring gear wasn't on very well if it did that?

Possibly not, it's a standard flywheel that was lightened and had a new ring gear fitted by MED in the early 90's.
The flywheel was laying on the floor having left the puller on it over night.

Thanks I'll have a look, although the teeth on the ring gear are pretty chewed up so may be a new lightweight flywheel is in order

Please put the slot horizontal

Hi nicklouse. That's a bit too cryptic for me, what did you mean?
Are you have never read a manual. The slot on the end of the crank/fly assy should be horizontal or the C clip can fall jamming the flywheel in place. You were lucky.

Ah yes, did read the manual but didn't understand as it described the timing marks at 3 o'clock which I couldn't see but now I've cleaned the flywheel it all started to make sense, as you say I got lucky
