i already have a 3/8" drive set that came with both imperial and metric sockets up to 1/2"  Sorry I wasnt more clear. looking to fill in the gaps for sizes larger tahn 1/2 inch.

For spanners i have a set from when i was in the US, but it doesnt have many sizes so i might just pick up another set while im here.

then I would either make a list of what you have, then we can fill in the gaps.

or walk into the First Halfords you see (or Machine Mart) and buy a set  of Imp. spanners. (you can never ever have too many and then you can also bend double to shapes needed for certain jobs. (1/2and 7/16 normally) the larger sockets does depend on the year of car as the flywheels use different size bolts. and the CV nuts can be metric sized but there are other nuts that still use the Imp sizes in the engine etc. so you will need the large Imp sized sockets and you may ALSO need the metric versions.

If the money will stretch, I'd also suggest 3 ratchet ring spanners in 7/16", 1/2" and 9/16" Get best quality in these, as poor quality ones will leave you with skinned knuckles.

Dang you Chris, you've just cost me  £50-odd on 3 Wera spanners. I really like Wera kit  :proud:

quite common out here but no AF easy to find.

I've not seen them in AF before either, they popped up on Amazon though.

Wera Joker range ... not cheap though

That's them and you're right, not cheap, will last though.

cant say that I would get on with them with that holding plate the number of times  have flipped open ended spanners in use is massive.

I've got a really old 1/2"+9/16" ratchet ring spanner that has seen a lot of action and apart from the chrome plating getting a bit flakey it is still working fine after 40 years. Not sure of the make but it's flat too so easy to hold and use.

I've got a small cheap set of metric ones .. you see them on fleabay ..  they are cranked and you flick the sides to switch direction, but I don't particularly like the feel .. I've used them on moderns to quickly get a nut on a thread where it's a bit tight to finger turn or I can't get the sockets in but then swap to a fixed ring spanner normally towards the end.

Not tried a Joker .. next time I'm at a show and Wera are displaying might see if they have something to try one on. But like you said they are expensive and if I bought any they would probably be the main three sizes: 7/16", 1/2" and 9/16" AF. I do like their screwdrivers though .. (the green/black variety). Although they have not yet been used on a car but more around the house.
