Strange Squeal From Engine..

Best Answer richcrosse , 19 May 2019 - 12:33 PM

vacuum leak ?

around inlet manifold area or carb area , or a pipe off / cracked

I would take fan belt off - just to eliminate alt & water pump - if not that ...

with engine running , a bit of brake cleaner around the manifold does engine note change ?

if it does - there is the problem

best of luck

Good shout - thank you!

I reseated the carbs and tightened them down and its gone, so must have been a loose nut or something.

Hi all,

Car is a '91 with 1380cc twin carb engine.

So I've recently finished a load of work on my mini, replacing the fuel pump and a few of the rubber fuel lines, I also rebuilt the entire clutch hydraulic system from wok to pedal.

The car has been off the road since December and after finishing the above work I started it for the first time today and it's developed a very strange squealing noise.

It sounds like belt slip, but I checked the fan belt and that seemed fine. Also it sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine, around the carbs/bulkhead area. Could I have done something wrong when I installed the fuel pump perhaps? It's a 1275 mechanical pump.

I uploaded a video of the engine running with the sound to YouTube if it helps - https://youtu.be/ORhZw2SaRfA

Any thoughts?

It sounds bearing-ish to me.

I would investigate the alternator.

Good luck

I'm with sledgehammer, could be a vacuumleak. In the video it sounds like it gets louder over the manifolds and dims when you're over the alternator so I doubt it's that one.

thanks for the update -

it's good to know what it was

It don't take much for a leak to start in that area
