I got my black Cooper ready for final priming this morning, got the compressor working and whilst the pressure built up I mixed a gun of thinned primer.

Then the compressor packed up. I fiddled about with it, but decided that as I've had it for 30 years I needed a new one.

That stopped the spraying for today, but I have ordered a new compressor from Machine Mart for delivery within 24 hours.

Top service and I got a great discount as well.

What have you gone for? In the workshop where I keep my mini we have a massive Clarke industrial compressor that effortlessly keeps up with anything I've ever used it for

I have bought an AirMaster with a 50 litre tank. It is rare that I need lots of volume and this will handle all car spraying I do plus run some air tools

It was just over £150 plus delivery, so a good deal.

A bit late now the horse has bolted for you cooper man

but for general info...... Machine Mart do a VAT free day every now and again

if you are thinking of a big purchase from them - has to be over about £50 quid - just get on their mailing list/e mail alerts for the next one in your region....

They have to do it by region as their system goes into meltdown when they used to do  national vat free days.

If you have a mate in the trade  he/she  can also claim vat off the price paid so its quite a discount if you want something expensive

Best

Matt

Bummer. Hate that, got that day mapped out and the main player is a no show or wants sick leave!

30 years isn't bad from a compressor. I think I got around 25 from my first one.

Did you remember to seal up the mixed primer?

Oh yes, in a sealed clean coffee jar.

Delivery is scheduled before lunchtime tomorrow, so I hope to get the full primer first coat on by mid-afternoon.

I got a discount from the advertised price of about 15% and discounted next-day delivery. Even if I hadn't. I would still have bought it as |I need it this week.

Is the airmaster quiet? I'm thinking of a compressor myself

It's not too bad and slightly quieter than my old one.

The new one arrived today and I have been spraying the primer using it.

The one strange thing is that I tried my old compressor which was absolutely dead yesterday and today it worked and built up pressure OK.

I may just service it and sell it once it works OK again. It is a large one with a 100 litre tank.

The compressor we use is about the same age as Cooperman's. It has a 250 litre tank so takes a while to get to pressure and it can be a nightmare to get going in winter. It will give 1/2 motor rotations then blow the fuse, replace the fuse and it will run all day, the issue can be worse if it's stood idle over a few weeks...
Not bad for 30 years faithful service, after all we all need repaired after a few decades.

Yes it takes alot of room and is loud compared to today's machines, we won't buy a new one as certain brands are weak or have a lack of spares available

In cold weather I used to have to warm the cylinder blocks and oil pan with a heat gun and still it would blow a fuse or two until it finally got going, then it would go all day.

I never thought of pre heating the cylinder, I will give that a try if we have issues

Thanks for the hints as always ?

We've had our Atlas Copco for well over 30 years, it's older than me and will probably outlive me as well. We had the blow off valve rebuilt by a local chap who is nuts about compressors a few years ago, and it made it like new again. Luckily that chap knew them inside-out, because my old man acquired this one through a friends father who worked for AC, turned out we've got a prototype so there's no model or serial number on it at all. Made sourcing parts a bit of a challenge to say the least.

I have a 50 litre compressor -  a Draper, its fine for tyre inflating etc but not up to running a 1/2" impact gun. If I was buying a new one Id definitely go bigger.

(I have a nice litte 18V Ryobi impact wrench which is a nice bit of kit.)
