Well, that explains my engine wobble... was the front inner mount to the engine steady. Seems like its molten... 
Just checked... its apparently the "

RACE GRADE ENGINE STEADY POLY BUSH KIT"

from minispares. Weird how that just melts down like that :/

 

anyone had this before? Or is there supposed to be some heatshielding between bush and engine block?

Why are the two bushes different colours? One road bush one competition bush? I've had a set fitted for over 20 years and they're still perfect.
Why has the melted bush got a step on the inner bore where the bush has melted leaving only a bolt sized hole? Looks like the sleeve wasn't butted up to the block. Looks like the bolt might have been too long and bottomed out in the block and appearing tight rather than compressing the bush and sleeve between the block and bracket. Still doesn't account for it appearing to melt though.

I had the exact same happen to mine. I did have a coolant leak and engine overheat prior to noticing the damage but was still very surprised at how deformed the bush was considering its designed to be bolted to the side of a hot engine.

its old vs new. Got some replacements as i thought the old one (black) was done for. Only saw how bad it was now. 
the step is just where poly melted into the metal sleeve. 
Yea the molten part is my shock to be honest :/

How tight are they supposed to be smacked on?

That looks like it's got far hotter than you expect from just normal cylinder head temperatures. What do the bushes at the bulkhead end of the steady bar look like, and how are your engine earth straps ?

The poly bushes I got for the upper engine steady from Minispares said in the instructions to fit a large penny washer between the bush and the engine.

 

It didn't say why - I presume it insulates it somehow although metal on metal isn't going to insulate from heat much at all.

nono i shook the engine too. was moving 2-4mm

those looked fine. didnt reuse them but i have them as spares now :) they looked new to be honest. earth strap was fine too. whine bost does it connect to? the front most of the longer bold holding the bush?

kinda makes sense now. Ill be looking for a washer tomorrow to do exactly that! dont need another melt-down

Mines got the penny washer between bush and block, I think it was factory fitted on my 72. From memory I think the bush overlaps a core plug so it supports the bush and stops it deforming into the core plug recess.

I've used the polybush for years with no problems and my mini also had a large washer fitted with the standard rubber types.

if you had your earth strap connected to the longer bolt of the engine steady and the bolt was a poor electrical connection into the cylinder head (dirty threads etc) it will generate quite a lot of heat when the starter motor is running - certainly enough to cause the damage seen on the bush you've shown

I tend to run an earth strap from one of the starter motor bolts back to the body
