Use a thin bead of Loctite Blue (5926) gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket including round the stud holes, the thin version will work fine.

Did this, but it didn't work, so maybe there's more to the problem than just a gasket. These thickers ones will be the last throw of the dice before I consider something else.

What are your thoughts (anyone) on the original type the Spares sell. They are black on one side, red on the other. I have been running them whenever needed but always interested in THE BEST solutions.

Certainly not all gaskets are created equal. I try and buy only gen-spec gaskets and its seemed to be a good plan so far. I only recently got a leak from the timing side...for the first time AND after multiple rebuilds. One of the few Minis that didnt leave its mark everywhere. Used the Rover timing cover gaskets with the dry "sealant" stuff built right onto the gasket. Did me right until recently but that would be an out of shape cover I suspect.

Those are the gaskets that leaked for me. Only 0.4mm thick, maybe ok if the top surface of the head has been skimmed and you're using a billet alloy thermostat housing but I couldn't get them to seal.
Never had an issue previously or since with the 1.6mm thick blue gaskets from minispares or other sellers. Cork ones are ok too but keep squidging out the side of the housing.

Is gasket sealant necessary with the blue gaskets?

I also like the blue gaskets from MiniSpares, they work a treat - no sealer needed. But - if you think you may have to have it back off again, I put  a layer of grease on the head side - lets you use it again.
