How much axial play of the bendix spring/washers assembly, at rest, along the armature shaft would you be comfortable with? I’ve got about .1” and it spins freely; my starter-r-r-r guy says it’s fine.

Its not the small inner spring that controls movement of the  gear assembly, its the large bulky one at the end of the armature shaft.  The other starters that I've looked at have no slop in the spring at all.

Found the problem.  The circlip holding the bendix spring/washer assembly on the end of the armature shaft had broken and allowed it to migrate on the shaft.  Don't know how long it would have stayed in place before letting go.
