So I’ve got the electric fan all up and running and I drove 30 miles this morning on a motorway (no more than 60 as still running in) and the temperature went above normal. Then in traffic at the end of the journey it went up more just before red and the fan kicked in, dropping the temp back down, but not to normal. I noticed the heater was turned off, so I turned it on to see if it made a difference and it did, but only a bit.

I checked the rad a few hours later and I had lost approx 250ml of fluid. So I topped back up.

On my return journey tonight, I started with the heater turned on and it stayed bang on normal all the way home, but zero traffic.

So my theory is by shutting off the heater valve it’s causing a build up of pressure, also there is white watery deposits on the front of the block, and in various parts, but I can’t see where they are coming from!

Thoughts?

closing the heater of just reduces the water from the hottest part of the engine flowing anywhere other that the rad.

Is the thermostat new/do you know it’s a working one?

I would pull the plugs and check them. You may have a small headgasket leak.
I may do a pressure test on the system too.

Yeah mech fan still fitted.

New stat fitted 500 miles ago.

I pulled the head off 500 miles ago, and it was all fine, refitted with new gasket.

Plugs are quite black / sooty, but that’s another issue perhaps.

Correction, looked at plugged this morning and they are quite white, so going to re check timing.

Richen the carb? I was under the impression the screws on the carb were just for idle and the needle is the only thing that can alter fuelling?

HS series carbs have a brass nut underneath the carb, just above the jet tube that goes to the float bowl.

The HIF is a screw on the clutch side of the carb.

If you have a Haynes manual its all there

I have a HIF44, but that adjustment screw at the back is just for adjusting the mixture at idle I was told.

Yes it will just be for idle but it will make a difference overall

Thanks. Well I took the thermostat out and it was seized, gave it a whack and it appears to be working fine now and opening in hot water. Will keep an eye on it

Yeah, a stuck T-Stat will def make it run hot!

On the HIF, the screw at the back raises and lowers the jet similar to the gland nut on the HS, so it affects the mixture at more than just idle. However, it works the opposite of the way you think, screw it in to richen the mixture. Screwing it in lowers the jet......

If you haven't already done so since you replaced the head gasket - retorque the head, reset the valve clearances and re-check the timing too. Last thing to do is the carb.

I’d be tempted to change it in case it jams up again.
The way I always tell if my stat works without removing it is if you watch the temp gauge you can usually see when it opens as from cold the temp will go up then as the stat opens you get about a 10 second drop in temperature of 5-10 degrees
It’s not a technical method but it works for me
