Hi; will shortly be starting an engine build. Need some advice on engine build lubricant.

Minispares sell Torco MPZ Engine Assemble Lube in a 4oz bottle for just under £12, but you can get 12oz here from Demon Tweeks for £11. I guess they are the same product?

 

I was considering Redline but its Synthetic and not sure how well it would mix with the future Miller 20W50 Engine Oil?

I used the Torco MPZ, sure mine was 4oz.more than enough for an engine rebuild!

Thats what I used when I built mine too.

I've only ever used Gearbox Oil except on the bores where I use a 5W30 Engine Oil.

 

I did buy one of these assembly lubes once (can't recall what it was) and on opening it, was pretty unimpressed by it.

Think I’ll get the Torco MPZ from Demon Tweeks though as you get three times as much for the money. About to order the pistons for the 1293 (finally), hence the build lube. Once ordered that will be me committed. It’s going to be a long slow project so don’t expect to see me nipping around with a new engine any time soon ?

That 12 ozs should last you for about 10 engine builds if not more  Most critical area is lubing the camshaft lobes and followers for that first start.

When I started building engines back in the 1960's there was no such thing as engine assembly lube. In those days we used EP90 gear oil mixed, when necessary, with SAE40 grade engine oil. This was also used to prime the oil pump.

 

I can't ever recall any problems with doing this.

Just re-checked the Demon Tweeks and 12oz is not £10.55 it's £20.45 So I guess I'll get it through MiniSpares with my 10% discount

I wouldn’t waste your money on it. A decent engine oil is more than good enough, the way I’ve been doing it for years without an issue. Even AMG hand build engines using engine oil, nothing more. If it’s good enough for them.........

Is there an advantage of using the super-sticky Torco stuff if the engine build is a prolonged affair?? With AMG engines they are probably built alongside the car and in-situ in a few days .. but in we are building an engine and restoring at the same time, that could be months (or longer!).

 

I've got a variety of building fluids including the Torco and some thin but sticky engine grease called Lubriplate which I use to keep the bores rust free. But I have been rebuilding my engine since 2016!! (Little matter of the day job and other home project getting in the way constantly!)
