65D Distributor Wiring Confusion

Hi guys, I know this has been covered before but I'm struggling to find info. I'm trying to suss out if I have the correct wiring for my coil/distributor.

I currently have it set up as follows:

On the positive terminal I have a pink/white wire which goes to the ignition (also splits and goes to the fuse box too), a white wire which goes to the module on the distributor, and a black wire which goes to the positive terminal on the starter motor solenoid.

On the negative terminal I have a black/white wire which goes to the distributor module and also to the rev counter.

The car runs perfectly set up like this, but while replacing the coil recently I noticed that the coil im using (and always have in the past) is for non ballast, and it requires the removal of the pink/white wire. If I remove this wire the car won't start (obviously), but I'm not sure where to go from there. Like I said the car runs great as it is, but I don't want to fry my coil lol. Hopefully someone knows what I'm on about?

The non ballast coil needs a 12 volt supply whereas the ballast type coil needs around 9 volts.  It seems you're running a 12 volt coil with the ballast wire connected to it.  You need to either use a 9 volt coil or replace the pink/white ballast wire with a normal wire.  As it is you're running a 12 volt coil with only 9 volts which although it may work isn't working as it should.

Cut the pink/white wire out of the loom and replace for a normal length of wire. Also the wire from the starter to the coil can be deleted

A type 65 dizzy is the Lucas electronic one with the amplifier module on the side and the cap held on by screws. The coil needs an unballasted full 12v and has to be GCL143 or equivalent which is different to any for a points equipped dizzy.

Definitely! I can be a bit dim sometimes hence why I'm always here asking questions  :lol:

 

A type 65 dizzy is the Lucas electronic one with the amplifier module on the side and the cap held on by screws. The coil needs an unballasted full 12v and has to be GCL143 or equivalent which is different to any for a points equipped dizzy.

 

Yep that is indeed the dizzy I have, and that is also the coil I have just fitted  :thumbsup:

Good - so just the white ignition fed live to the  coil's + terminal and the wires to the dizzy. You might have an extra black/white striped wire on the -ve for a rev counter.

Yep that is indeed the dizzy I have, and that is also the coil I have just fitted :thumbsup:
