When fitting a thermostat in my recently acquired 1972 1000ccmini I found this passage blocked with gasket sealant, any idea why the old owner would do this and what effect this would have on the engine?

I agree with Philrulz

That does look like the bypass hose stub has been rather crudely blanked

How that engine hasn't overheated due to water loss is beyond me

the stat housing surface is not looking fresh.

i would be rectifying that blockage soonish and then getting the engine flushed through with some cleaner. idf you are not planning on pulling the power unit soon.

It definitely is the bypass hose, why would someone purposely block it?

Yep, you're absolutely right, I can only.omagime the rest of the circuit is in similar condition, I'll be looking into buying some additive to flush the engine asap

The reason the bypass hose may have been deleted is that the concertina type hoses are rubbish and a previous owner fitted a non bypass pump?

As Cal844 said, there is a bodge just as bad as glue together CV boots, you can get a concertina hose about 2" long that goes between the water pump and the head. They are known to fail. Maybe last owner had one blow and just siliconed it shut and swapped the pump for a non bypass type. Or maybe ordered wrong pump and just siliconed it closed.

Dont think there is any benifit with it closed just causes the head to warm up slower as the water cant circulate around the head it has to do the whole loop .
