Hi, I'm getting my mini back on the road after an 11 year layup, but I'm having trouble with the brakes. Ive put new discs and pads on, everything was ok there. New cylinders on the rear as they had seized, but i am unable to bleed the rears. Ive taken the master cylinder off the servo and opened it up and nothing appears to be sticking/seized, so i'm wondering if it the brake limiter that's at fault? Would that stop the rears from bleeding, or is there a sequence to follow? Thanks in advance.

It took a while for the rears of mine to get fluid through when I rebuilt it. I open the bleed nipple on one side and left it over night with a pipe connected, then went for a re-bleed and it worked. If that doesn't work, then yes, the limiter can often be at fault.

Could also be flexi hoses ...

I'm pretty certain it's either master cylinder (most likely) or limiter. I slackened the rear brake pipe at the mc and pressed the pedal and nothing came out. Stripped mc again and took reservoir off and looked like a build up of crap around holes in it (original brake fluid from when car was built) Now appear to be getting fluid coming out of it at mc, but unable to do more as I was on my own and don't have an eezi-bleed. Will update asap.

Nearly a quarter of a century old brakes, and only replacing the rear cylinders ?

 

Why the skimping on the critical parts which stop you,   like the entire system ?,  far cheaper than a funeral.

Problem solved. Removed and partly stripped brake limiter (behind the big nut) made sure the piston was free and the ball bearing that seals to cut supply to rear line was free. Refitted and found pedal would go all the way to floor before bleeding, unlike before where it would go half way and then was solid. My conclusion is that the limiter had stuck in the closed position, therefore not allowing fluid through and resulting in a solid pedal. I also learnt how the brake limiter actually works, so they are not a mystery anymore!

I agree. £100 for a new valve or £5000 for a mini, plus a funeral ??
