Hi,

 

I've fitted 3 clocks to my sprite. They all work. The only problem is that only the right hand side of the rev counter lights up and the indicators.

 

I'm pretty sure the supply to the multi-plug is good so before I shell out £60 to get a new one, can I test the old one?

If so, how? Am I just doing a continuity test?

Hi Rod,

 

You can do a couple of things:

1. Carry out a continuity test from the multi-plug terminals to each bulb holder and check that the printed circuit is intact. This is best done with the multi-plug disconnected from the printed circuit board. The copper tracks can get chewed up a little as the bulb holders are twisted during bulb insertion or removal, this is quite common. You should get less than a few ohms between the multi-plug connector and each bulb holder .
2. With the printed circuit accessible and the multi-plug connected, switch on the side lights and check you have 12v at each of the "positive" terminals of the bulb holder ends of the copper tracks. You can do a similar test with the indicator warning lamps and the oil pressure and ignition lights, with the igntion switched on. Just take care not to let any part of the printed circuit board touch earth during this test.

Check the thin copper strips where the multiplug fits in and the brass connectors of the multiplug - they can oxidize slightly and cause a poor connection. Some very fine sandpaper brushing lightly over them should sort it out. Especially check the black earth wire connection which is critical for everything to work well in that department.

Purely because you don't mention it and no-one has asked yet: Have you checked the bulbs are good by swapping a working and not-working bulb?

all looks good from a continuity perspective. So I've cleaned everything. One or two of the bulb holders were a bit oxidised as well. Cleaned the contacts and lifted them up a bit to make sure they are pressing in to the circuit properly.

 

Oh - and I did swap bulbs around and all are good so its not bulbs.

Will test soon I hope but my mini has thrown a spanner in the works on that one. The alarm keeps going off - just will not stop. Got to find out what the hell that's all about before I can get power back on everything. I hate this car sometimes :-(

After my little spring clean of the contacts, tested it today. Worked a treat

 

Changed the bulbs over to LEDS as well. Nice and bright.

 

I don't have any lights behind the 3 small clocks but I'm not worried about those.
