has anyone got any (current) info on using a thermostat built into the filter housing? I'm sure it's been done, as searches reveal, but I cant find a link to the actual stat

thanks

Thermostat for what? I've seen plenty of people who tap the filter housing for temp/pressure sensor. However I've not seen an oil cooler thermostat. The issue with that will be size, the oil stats all use a wax element to open and close the valve. I've been looking for a lower profile or electrical version for a fee years now. Closest I found was these: https://www.merlinmo...-ports-19-spt76

That's the one. But note this would be placed in-between the filter and filter housing. You do not need to change any of the piping from the block to the filter housing.

Good point ... wonder what the clearance is for the filter or if you need a smaller one

Dsn say "Normal oil cooler kits supply adaptors to fit directly into the engine block and the oil filter head. The thread in the block is 5/8" UNF and the thread in our filter head is 1/4" NPT (i.e. both standard for that age of engine). The braided hose in our kit is Dash 6, in case you wanted to just replace the hoses, but that would be unusually small for the longer hose lengths required."

Sounds good then. So I need one 5/8unf to dash8 adapter in the block, one 1/4npt to dash8 adapter in the sender, then just keep everything dash8. Simples!

One last question, is it a no no to but a second hand oil cooler?

IMHO it's not worth it, not unless you knew the history of the old cooler. You don't know how old it is of if the engine running it blew up? For peace of mind buy a new one.

I would never use a used one unless I was the one that used it.
