Coil For Lumenition Magnetronic Module

Currently have a 998 1989 Racing Green - with ballast and with the points replaced with a Lumenition Magnetronic module: http://www.minispare...nic/MTK007.aspx

 

 

Everything working fine - however I'm looking to 'upgrade' by removing the ballast wire and replace with a standard 12V system, following KernowCooper's guide.

 

I know I need to change my coil to a non-ballasted - the question is to what? For a standard coil, is there any advantage of the sports 105 vs a 101?

For electronic ignition (65D) you need a GCL143 equivalent coil. I don't use Lucas coils as I've had one blow it's guts after 30 miles and 3 more that break down creating a misfire under load

I'd check the Lumenition website, I've a feeling some of their electronic convertions were designed for ballasted coils. I don't think there's anything to be gained from a 'sports' coil. You plugs will spark when the voltage is high enough to jump the gap regardless of what coil they're attached to. It's only if the coil voltage doesn't get there - might've been a problem with a high revving F1 V8 back in the day, not with a road going A series with half as many cylinders doing half the revs.

This is the wiring diagram for the module. Currently I have it wired up exactly like this, running an additional wire from the fuse box to the red wire on the module, keeping the ballast wire. I plan to keep this wire but connect to coil positive and module, removing the ballast wire. From this diagram I should be using a standard non ballast coil rather than the ballast (or I guess a later electronic ignition one).

Like Ethel I’m not really sure of the benefits of a sports 105 type coil over the standard 101 for this application but be interested in any views. Thanks
