Hi all I've just replaced my 1983 mini front brake discs and pads but now the disc won't rotate until alot of effort is used. I've never done a brake change before so I wouldn't know where to start on solving this ??

Edit: the pistons are as far back as possible.

Are the brakes standard 7.5 or 8.4 inch discs or are they vented type discs?


Did you clean the calipers so the pads can slide freely? It could be the paint on the pads needs rubbed back

They can be troublesome to fit until the pads bed in a little.

It usually bed the pads in for 100 miles without the shims(just a light smear of high temp grease where the shims sits) then after 100 miles I attempt to refit the shims.

When I bed brakes in don't be scared to use them but also don't do emergency stops every corner

I usually just left foot brake lightly while driving along at about 50 mph until the brakes have a few heat cycles on them then do a few harder stops but usually only from 60 - 30 mph and only if the road is clear in all directions

No problem, when my friend fits discs and pads I usually need to grab a fire extinguisher as the brakes are smoking when we do our final checks after the road test ?

Without the pads in, does the wheel turn ok? (Obviously do not drive the car like that!!) Sometimes the pistons can seem like they're all the way back, but in actual fact there's a fraction they can go back further. They will also self adjust, if you try pumping the pedal a bit and then spinning the wheel, is it any easier?

Any car i change pads on i bed, considering 90% of pads come with a bedding abrasive coat.
