Can anyone indentify this knocking/tapping sound coming from the engine.

Should probably give some more info.

The car has recently (3 weeks ago)been into the garage to be motd and setup correctly. Garage checked timing, reset valve clearances reset mixture, carb set up. Was running perfectly when it came out.

Couple days ago had the squeeking sound (fan belt) so I've adjusted that. Yesterday I noticed this sound. Could it be to do with adjusting the fan belt tension etc?

Sounds like tappet noise, was it worse after the garage had done the works?

It might be worth asking the garage what they set the valve clearances at and asking them to check them again as you are concerned about the noise.

Don't know exactly what sound you are referring to, but it clearly sounds like tappets to me. Did the garage set up with correct clearances? Or maybe for some reason a tapped has disadjusted...

Anyway it is a very simple procedure and there are plenty of videos on Youtube about setting the valves in a classic Mini. You could do it on your own.

Well I think I found out what it was, just having a look around engine and then one of the ht leads fell off the dizzy. Plugged it back in securely and it seems to be better. Not sure if this could`ve been the cause.

I may well check the clearances. They do specialise in classic cars so I would hope they set them up ok.

If it was arcing on the block or body work it would have made a fairly loud clicking sound. But it would have also been running badly.

have the same sound but it's not my valves tapping. could be a possible air leak from the exhaust/inlet manifold. something worth checking

That to me sounds like 1 tappet is slightly out.

As above (Gazza), if that was a lead off, it would have run awful with real lack of power.  It,s not an air leak either

Not timing chain or alternator bearings as it would be a constant rattle.  That is just one tappet by the sounds of it

If you adjust it and it comes back quickly, make sure it's not a cam that's wiping.
