Focus didn't look like they actually put much effort into that overtake?
Looking at the video they pull out, then put their foot down, then kinda lazily saunter alongside the van, finally gettin sideswiped before they'd even got level with the van.
Drop it a gear, mash your foot into the floor and you'll be past the thing before the idiot decides to pull out on you.

I well remember my step father overtaking from about 45mph in fifth in his 1985 1.6 Jetta, we used to spent an eternity on the wrong side of the road. Third would have been far more appropriate, far less dangerous and far more fun.

Nasty. Glad you were alright.
I was in a Morris Minor van long ago belonging to my mate whilst he was towing it in his dad's Volvo 440. He decided to overtake someone just as someone was overtaking us. Weirdest feeling being a passenger like that but all was well. I had words with him afterwards about mirrors and things.

Had that happen to me, taking the children to school one morning.
The Transit van driver accused me of trying to overtake two vehicles at once.
I was, him and then the one in front.
He claimed that he looked in his mirror and saw nothing, but didn't say which one., It certainly wasn't the driver's door mirror, he would have had his eyes transfixed looking down on the wife's mini skirt.
To cap it all, his boss in the office 25 miles away was able to tell the insurance company exactly what happened.

Jeeeez, I know it was kinda a lucky recovery for the focus, but damn brother! It's the SIMPLEST of tiny little things, ignorance and laziness that causes accidents.
