The mini automatic always had 4 gears when it was introduced which made it a step up from its contemporaries who only had 3.
With regard to the power output, some is lost due to the torque converter when compared to the manual.

As I understand it positions 1-3 put the gear box in that gear, position D (drive) is in fully automatic and you will get gears 1 through 4.
Position D is effectively 4.
I feel the need to point out I have never driven an auto mini, but this is my understanding

Prototype Mini Automatic 1962
"The design itself put all known hydraulic boxes in the shade and to make the most of the 850cc engine's meagre output, gave four speeds as against the three of other automatics current at the time."

Nope, both the 84 & 92 automatic mini's had 3 gears. I have the photo of the 92 gear lever & box to show you, but I don't know how to upload photos on here. The staple clip sign to upload photos isn't on my screen.
This is a snippet from the 1978 to 1989 Rover Factory Workshop Manual
I think it might be easy to think or suspect they have only 3 gears due to the layout of the shifter pattern.
As the other guys have said, all Mini Auto Boxes from their introduction to the end of production had 4 forward gears.

However, this is the layout for the 1984 mini. It doesn't have a Park P. Can I transfer to a 92 mini that in addition has a Park P on the gearbox? Or will this create problems?
