Looking at buying a new style petrol cap for my car.

Don't really want one that fits over the one that I already have, like that hideous Aston,  the grub screw thingy, nor do I want  a Monza style with the fiddly brass ring fitment so am after some thing else .......however.....what measurements am I looking at as al the ones I have seen seem to quote internal sizes ranging from 37mm to above 50mm, my car is being worked on at present so don't have it handy to measure..........help apprciated.

I have a brand new replacement std cap from MiniSpares doing nothing. I could post it to you the weekend at the earliest. It's a later non-vented type (bought it for a 1990 998), but the quality is awful (not MiniSpares fault, just all that seems available currently. They don't advertise it as NOS or mega quality or anything).

I never used it, but you could use it for measurements if it sounds suitable. It's for later cars that had petrol breathers on the top of the petrol tank (late 70's onwards I think).

I managed to get a 2nd hand 1990 cap from eBay for mine which was in near mint condition and exactly the same as I have on the car already, so great for a 2nd tank that was going in.

PM me if you'd like the MiniSpares one I have. No charge. Would rather help someone out in a spot. Just can't get it in the post until Sat though.

Cool.........Hopefully I will make both too, my tinkering is almost completed now, some went good others didn't exactly go to plan but thats what it is all about.

Am liking that, my idea was similiar in the idea that I didn't like any available ones, so initially looked at some old bakelite ones to modify, however they are too small so iam toying with modifying some vintage brass caps that funnily enough come from the US of A.

will put up some pics if they turn out OK.

Look up 'Waso' petrol caps, the pentagonal ones - It's another option. Looks quite big on a mini but very good quality, I got one from my dad's mini and I've had it on mine over 15 years no problems.

 

I could probably take a pic of it with a tape measure for internal fit if you need - but seems to be a 'range' of fits from google searching

I made it myself. I have an old manual metal lathe. It was just a matter of measuring the neck and an old cap and turning a block of aluminum to the shape I sketched. I just repolished it on the lathe as I left it on the roof after filling the tank and drove off, fortunately no one drove over it before I got it off the road.....
