For the most part, up to the MPI, they were fundamentally all the same.
Some had different valves, slight port changes and differences in cam profiles (though not radically different).
If reconditioning one, it's very little work (usually!) to change from one engine spec to another - except as noted above, for the MPI.
The MPI did have a different block, the Oil Filter fitted directly on to it and it has no provision to fit a distributor.
