Hi Folks,

Ok, drove my mini in the dark for the first time in 2 years - my issue was when I put headlights on my fuel gauge and temp went crazy, they went to above maximum! when I put my indicators on the cluster flashed like a Christmas tree and main beams everything went dark.

So had to drive it for around 45 minutes like this - It wasn't getting hot and everything on the outside was working  how it should....

Before I start digging around and more then likely break something is there anywhere I should start looking???

Its a 95 SPI by the way

Many thanks

voltage stabiliser? did they have them on SPi's?

If not, probs a dodgy piece of wiring!

They did have a stabiliser but it is built into the fuel/temp gauge PCB.

Sounds like an poor earth to the instrument cluster issue to me.

Would it be worth starting at the clocks and working my way out - i.e. remove the clocks have a look and follow any wires to a potential bad earth?

Have you had the plug out the back of the dash previously. I had similar on mine when I rebuilt it. Turns out I had put the wiring plug in upside down. Swapped it round and all worked great.

It is probably a bad common earth point like GraemeC said. I have seen it years ago in a Toyota. The headlights would get brighter as the heater blower speed was increased, the instrument lights would blink when indicator was on and so on. Check the earth by the gusset next to the brake servo and the one on the left tail light next to the boot floor and fuel tank. They need to be clean with no corrosion.

Poor earth to the instrument cluster. Had it happen to me before, with the lights on the car would "overheat".

I think the dash lights earth themselves through whatever they can, which can be the gauges
