I had the same problem.  If you have an old idler gear and a welder there's an easy solution:

It's quite possible to undo the First Motion Shaft Nut with the Engine on the Gearbox.

The Diff does need to be removed, then the Shifter Interlock can be disabled, 1st and 4th Gears can be engaged, locking the Gearbox.

The Nut is indeed tight, it is an ordinary Right Hand Thread and done up to 150 ft / lb. You can likely just get to that with 1/2" drive gear, but I find at these torques, 3/4" Drive Sockets and Torque Wrenches are much easier.

On reassembly, I don't use the locktabs as they are too soft, I use Loctote 242.

You can of course do as Unburnt did v

Sorry, I was being a bit thick last night and realised later that the diff doesn't need to come out to block the box. I'm fitting not removing the input gear and my torque wrench is good for 250 lbft so it won't be difficult after all.

I’m having trouble disabling the shifter interlock. Turning all the way to the left does nothing. The gearbox was in 4th gear when removed from the car if that matters? Any help?! Please and thank you!

Ah, you do need to put it in to Neutral in order to be able to turn the Spool Interlock 1800 that's needed to disable the Interlock. Also, under the RH Side Diff Side Cover, you'll see a Spring that's in a small steel tube. That steel tube needs to be removed too. Note that on the inner end of that steel tube, there is a steel ball, you'll need to remove that (to allow for reassembly) so you don't loose it !

I played around with it and got it out. I do any another question, how does this bearing come off the first motion shaft? In the haynes manual it says to use two screw drivers but it looks like it’s threaded in. By the way I bought a rebuilt gearbox and just need to move old transfer gears to new gearbox.

As you have removed the rollers, just use a deep socket and as you wind the nut off it will push the inner race of the bearing off the nose of the shaft.

What size socket? 1 1/8?
