Hi all, I've recently changed the engine in my 1989 mini from the standard 998 to a 1275, and I went to note down the engine number to send the v5 off to the DVLA, and it turns out the engine number plate is pretty worn, and some of the numbers are pretty illegible. I can tell the first 8 numbers are 12A28GO3 but I've got no idea how to get the rest of it. Does anyone have any idea of anything I can do to either get the number from it, or possibly get a new number for it?

Also, just so everyone knows, I bought the engine from a reputable mini garage nearby me, so theres no chance of it being previously stolen, and also I'm planning on exporting the car in a few years so I don't want to risk not updating the logbook.

Thanks

It does not matter. It can be whatever you want. You can have a new one made with anything on it if you want.

Have you got a receipt for the engine?

Maybe the garage recorded it on that ?

Or, maybe the garage themselves may have a record of it, it's only a question.

Once you get that sorted, order a new plate from Retroman and it'll save a world of trouble down the track.

Just a quick thing, in case it helps at some point, the 8 in there is most likely a B.

A common engine from Mayfairs and Sprites etc

Cheers

It will be 12A2BG03 as a prefix

Sometimes you need proof from a garage to keep the DVLA bods happy

DVLA can be a lottery, some don't bother others are jobsworth bar stewards

To be fair they are generally reasonable
