and Rorf...

It is a drain hole for the water pump chamber..

but how could it drain anything with a gasket and the pump blocking it when fitted.. and that "hole" would always be underwater in use surely  or am I missing something obvious here (not obvious to me though)

I think Einstein said you cant make things fool proof because we under estimate the tenacity of a fool <--- I am referring to me here no one else

And the only stupid question is the one you don't ask :-)

Is the hole maybe to allow a small recirculation flow back through the pump when there is no forward flow? (e.g. when the thermostat and heater valve is closed) A small flow through the pump might be needed to lubricate the seal?

Hi, Mal Drummer, I can see the logic of that apart from the fact the Gasket seals that hole so water cant get "through" it, unless maybe back in the day original gaskets don't seal that hole

The gasket for mine doesn't seal the hole.

The bypass hose allows coolant to circulate when the thermostat and heater valves are closed.  The hole we're talking about won't make any difference in that regard.  Also there is always coolant around the water pump seals unless you've run out of coolant.

The hole is there probably to stop a build up of debris/rust/molding sand in that pocket :D Who knows?

Like I said at the start.

Drainage.

12,000 years ago, during the last ice age, before antifreeze was commonly available, there used to be a tap at the bottom of the radiator and another on the back of the block, so that the cooling system could be drained at night.

Yea well that 3 cc of water left in the pump chamber if that hole wasn't there when the system was drained before the big freeze would have done much damage
