Driving along and car running fine ( 1997 MPI )  car suddenly lost power, difficult to drive although it did not stall. Limped home unable to get any real speed up. Car started but sounds rough and will not run under load.

My problem is where to start, is it electrical, fuel or mechanical.

No sign of water leak from head gasket, changed plugs and leads no change.

No unsure what route to go down? any checks I can carry out to narrow down the cause?

regards

fergy

I'd compression test (do all cylinders once dry, then pour a tea spoon of oil down the bore and repeat the test, note both readings for all cylinders) then leak down test the motor and report your findings

Same here,  same happened to me years ago, and it was the head gasket.

Took the car to sommerford minis and after checking for any electrical or fuel issues the found compression problem between cylinders 2&3. So new head gasket later and running fine now.

Excellent a fairly common failing point to be honest atleast a head gasket is easy on an A

I had the same thing happen to me and it was a blocked fuel filter.
