I am a complete novice to the world of minis, and are hoping that you lovely people will be able to help me out?

 

I bought the wifey a 1998 mini cooper spi a little while ago, and I have just had the tyres replaced with new. While doing so I spotted that there was a bolt missing on what looks to be a damper that mounts to the bottom of the engine (sump area) to the front lower valance. I have found a bolt of similar size as a temp solution but I can feel it is not the correct size. 

 

Please could someone help me two fold 

 

A) what the component is? 

B) what size bolt is required?

 

I have looked in the haynes manual but unless I'm being stupid I cannot find it. I have attached pictures and the bolt required is the shiny one that I am pointing at.

PS alot of mini owners near you im the otherside of rickmansworth / harefield to you

Dear all I am hoping that this forum will be able to help me?

 

I am a novice to the world of Mini, however I bought a 1998 R reg mini cooper spi for the wifey a while ago. I have recently replaced all four tyres and whilst doing I noticed a missing bolt on what seems to be a damper. I have found a replacement as a temp resolve but I can feel that this is not the right size.

 

Could anyone help me two fold please?

 

A) what size bolt do I need to replace?

B) is it a damper?

 

I have looked over the manuals and cannot find this item. The bolt I need is the one I am pointing at.

As Philrulz says it's a lower engine steady.

 

The correct bolt is:    ⁵/₁₆" UNC thread, 1¹/₈" length

You can get a set screw from here https://www.namrick....___Nuts__7.html 1¹/₄" long which you may have to add a washer to if it bottoms out but it'll probably be alright with the bracket under it.  Use loctite on the threads and don't overtighten.

 

If the thread in the casing has gone I'd remove the lower steady rod, leave the bolt out and fit these instead:

your help is much appreciated, I have ordered a replacement bolt and some thread lock. Hoping thread isn't stripped now.

Based on personal experience do check the thread on the new bolt is the same as that on the casing. The casing thread is easily damaged. A PO had mashed the casing thread on mine and screwing in a new fixing only made matters worse. Otherwise it's straightforward enough.

Using Metric screws doesn't help .. and I bet a lot of "garages" have done that to save finding the correct UNF bolt .. "it's only ali" ...
