Has anyone, whose TomTom says "Waiting for valid GPS signal..."  managed to get it working ?

never with TomTom but had the same issues with others. it sorts its self out after a day or so.

 

but i would go to the TomTom forums and see if others are having issues.

I find with mine, sometimes if you touch on the Sat Signal Bar, it brings up the full Sat Signal Display, the one that shows how many Satellites it can 'see' and their signal strength. I don't know why, but usually within a few seconds of that displaying, it will 'lock on' and happy days.

 

If there's cloud cover or a lot of trees, buildings and stuff narrowing it's direct view to the sky, it can take a while.

Mine will usually after inputting an address give me the waiting for signal but picks a signal up quite quickly when I move out of my home dead spot. If it stays stuck on that power off and then back on and it should reset.

Two years ago, our tomtom started just shutting down 1/2 way through the journey.  Going on the tomtom site was a series of  "I wouldn't start here if I was you".

 

A year ago I was given another unused one by someone whose car was fitted with GPS.  This developed the same fault.  Journeys to unknown destinations became a good old road atlas and a tomtom plus spare for the final few miles.

 

About a month ago, even this failed, because of the "Waiting for valid signal" problem, so on Monday morning I decided to try and sort things.  Up comes 'download such and such', and nothing seems to happen.  Eventually find the download hidden behind the page.  then the download stalled about 80% of the way through, ugh

 

For something this sophisticated, the serial number ought to all that is required for tomtom to know what is needed.

 

Thanks to Mab's kind post, I have discovered that because I have tried to correct more than one satnav, I am probably locked out for six months.

Over here in the states we mostly use Garmin - I've had them for decades and have always been happy with them. Don' know if they are the answer in "Yurrup".

 

As the Garmin factory is local to me, mine always seems to works perfectly!

I just looked on their website, but there's little info on it. Is it a Street Navigator like a car 'GPS' ?

 

I ask because I have been on the lookout for an 'App' I can use with an Ipad that is similar to a Tom Tom, Navman or Garmin Street Navigator, but it needs to be a true GPS and not work via the internet (as many places I go, there simply is no internet).

 

Would Waze work in this way ?

Hi Chris, a good “offline” GPS app I’ve found for the iPad is Metroview. You download it once and then you won’t need a 3G signal, just a GPS enabled iPad.

There is also the expensive 4x4 apps like Hema if you want the off-road trails too

I use waze on the road, but I can’t see a setting to download maps (which you can do with google maps)

Waze won't work if you don't have a phone signal, right? Large areas of the US don't have phone coverage...….

I do have Hema 4x4 maps and they are really really good - Off Road - almost hopeless and verging on useless On Road. It just seems 'dumb' to have 2 devices and I'm trying to integrate, move with the times (hahahahahaha) and tidy the clutter.

I also had an App called Copilot, while it looks good, I could never get it to work beyond finding a location or where I was at, it didn't give directions or move as I did, it's like a trial version, but I could never find a purchase option,,,,

I believe Waze is GPS based but not sure. However it’s live and is constantly updated from other users. So any broken down vehicles, Police etc etc etc notifies you if you are on the particular route.

It constantly looks at traffic situations and again updates you. You can do a lot with it and as it’s free I cannot fault it.

I have it on most days now purely for heads up with traffic and when the local feds set up speed traps.

correct and that is the one I have that has had GPS issues. generally OK but have had weeks with it not functioning. use it daily. TomTom is the back up/alternative I never rely on one system.

 

Waze has now been bought by Google and is used to help google maps work better. was really pissed when they dropped the "on the other side" button for traffic jams.
