A few weeks ago I noticed the plugs were a red colour:

We took the engine out on Saturday and popped the head off:

The engine runs really well and only burns about 50ml of oil a month

I'm using Penrite Classic Light 20W/60 oil.

The fuel is supposedly 89 RON 'super' unleaded - there's only the one fuel supplier over here now and I'm dubious about its quality - but we have to go with what's available.

Any ideas anyone?

Some say it's due to the use of methylcyclopentadienylmanganesetricarbonyl as an octane boosting additive.

Methylcyclopentadienylmanganesetricarbonyl eh?  It was on the tip of me tongue...  So it must be a fairly recent addition to our rubbish fuels then; I've not seen it before.

Maybe its mineral additive from the red planet ??

Mars is cold and when it gets to the temp of the center electrode it turns red

Maybe its like red diesel ? a IOM tax free petrol ?

Watch out if you come over here customs and excise will be diping your tank...

or am I talking Methylcyclopentadienylmanganesetricarbollox

You can get all kinds of kinky colours with fuel additives. I'm looking for something yellow now to match the paint colour.

Hey Fella!

Are you using Manx Petroleums (Shell refinery) or Ellen Vannin Fuels (Total Refinery)?

The super unleaded over here is rated at a minimum of 97.2, it's usually higher than that (well the Manx Petroleums stuff is) but we don't have any ethanol in it which is a nice bonus.

I tend to stick to Manx Petroleums.  I've found even their standard unleaded is a much better quality and a higher octane than the EVF petrol.

I noticed my plugs etc going that colour when I started to use Millers VSPE power plus (which funnily enough is maganese based)!

That is some good info there, thanks. I tend to fill up at The Milestone anyway.

That's exactly where I fill up too!

And I wish our fuel was tax free!  It's a lot more expensive than across the water!  People don't understand that we have 20% VAT, National Insurance and Income Tax.  Income Tax is a maximum of 20% but the cost of living over here more than makes up for that!

I always fill up at S&S, I think it's EVF. And there's me thinking it all came off the same boat!

I'm curious to know if it would do the same if you filled up with Manx Petroleum Super Unleaded?
Yes S&S is EVF Fuels. Makes me think they are just boosting their standard unleaded fuel with an additive to make Super Unleaded. I know Manx Petroleum get theirs from the Refinery.
