Hi everyone!

Just a quick question about gearbox and clutch etc.

Recently shifting from neutral into first has become a big deal for me and my mk1 998. With my foot on the floor, I'm still having to almost force the car into first gear. Going from first to second isn't as bad but there is still the same sort of feeling there. Despite this, 2nd to 3rd is always fine and usually 3rd to 4th is aswell, occasionally crunching every now and then. This all seems to improve slightly as the car runs and drives for 5-10min.

Before this problem came up the gears shifted seamlessly. Wondering if anyone could offer any advice? Reverse gear has also had a grind to it for some time ?

I've been reading some of the forums and all manner of diagnosis and solutions have crossed my mind... bleeding the clutch, idle gear etc. I also read about a guy in the UK who had similar troubles on cold mornings and mentioned that it may have had something to do with the oil. I checked my oil and, as well as being too old (whoops!) it was low. I topped it up and the problem slightly improved. I intend the drain the old oil and replace the filter over the weekend but in the meantime, I would love any advice or knowledge anyone can share!!

Cheers

have you checked the return stop clearance? it does need adjustment as the friction plate wears.

Does the clutch bite with the pedal close to the floor?

Can you select all the gears nicely with the engine turned off. If not, it points to an internal gearbox issue

Thanks for the promp reply guys!

I'll check they clearance over the weekend, the clutch does bite pretty much at the floor (I'm guessing this calls for adjustments) and yes I can easily shift through the gears while the car is turned off.

Thank you all again!

That's good points to a "non" internal G box or gear lever linkage issue, so as the other guys have said adjust the clutch properly and if that doesn't help, check the ball at the end of the clutch lever for wear / cracking

Changing the oil will help, possibly solve this issue

So id personally say to do that first then if you still can't change as good as before look at the adjustments as detailes above.

It does sound like the clutch isn't fully disengaging to me.

Check your slave cylinder , should be dry inside the rubber boot

Did you solve this, I solved my similar issue by bleeding the clutch and getting rid of all the old crappy clutch fluid and trapped air!

I have this exact same issue, turns out the slave cylinder is weeping slightly at the boot. I've got all the parts but probably wont have the chance to do it until winter so have topped up the fluid and bled for now and is much better
