as i was stripping down the engine last night (which went ok by the way the gasket seemed was bust and the engine block and cyclinders looked just fine) however on the block underneith where the gasket fits were some holes... they were mythodical and looked like the block has been made with them in and they matched holes in the cylider head, the mystery is that some of them seemed to have been sealed for some reason but the seals were rusted away and when i took the gasket they fell apart, or was it just C**p that was burned into the holes but looked manmade?

has anyone heard of such holes being sealed? is it important before i put the engine back together to seal them again if so how?

sometimes not all the holes in the head mate up with holes in the block, the head gasget blockes them up when you put everything back together, it is not a problem and should all go back together fine

There's loads of small holes over the block and head decks as you have found. They are for water or oil to flow from one to the other. The only ones that should have plugs fitted AFAIK are the oilways which are fitted with a brass plug which is then drilled. It's just to act as a restrictor and reduce the flow of oil into head so it doesn't spray out of the rocker post and make a huge mess.
If plugs are supposed to be fitted they won't fall out, unless your engine REALLY overheated.

If what you found was orange and crumbly, it's just the rust that forms in the waterway holes. Clean it all out. Possibly a sign of too little or poor quality anti-freeze being fitted. If these blockages were severe it could be what caused your over heating in the first place.

When you have it all back together use some coolant flush for a week to clear the build up out of the water jacket. Just use a little anti freeze with the flush, 'because you'll be throwing it all out in a week anyway. After that you can put the proper coolant in.

Might be an idea to fllush the oil system as well.

how can i flush the oil system, what with? is there a diagram or picture somewhere which shows which holes should be blocked and drilled, i would take a picture but i don't have a digital camera

also someone told me that when replacing the cylinder head again on a mini theyused to have they found fitting the rubber breather tube between the block particulary tricky, however i don't remember there being a small breather hose in between block and cylinder head and there isn't mention of one there in the haynes manual is he mistaken or am i missing something?

the small hose in question is the small coolant hose on the right hand side as your looking at the engine, just by the water pump.

the easiest way of checking which holes are ok is to put the new head gasket up against the head, and see which holes line up. the ones that do are the ones which are needed for the water to flow through the engine.

as for the oil flush, check in halfords for one, the way i would do it is to buy cheap oil, and run it for a day or two before putting the good oil in it.

as i get my oil from work i just use that
