Hi;

I am restoring a 1275 A+ Metro Engine pulled from a 1.3 Metro Clubman (Or so it said on the back of the car).

I need some help IDing the CamShaft. The Head has been identified as an early MG Metro Head and I assumed that the Cam was also an MG Metro but looking at this thread it does not have the tell tale 1/4 groove? It actually looks more like the OE A+998 Cam?

So my thoughts of re-using this cam in my 1310 build are dashed?

Here's the Cam:

3/8" wide lobes and one ring used to be the 88G 229 cam from the 997cc cooper engine, known as a "948", a smidgen hotter than the standard Cooper S cam.

Looks like I need to measure the lobes then.

Have to say some impressive knowledge around on this forum that to me looks like a cam.

That is an A+998 standard cam. They were fitted to the economy versions of the 1275 metro for more low down torque and hence economy.

Looks like I’ll need to invest in a Kent MD266 then for the Metro build. And I’ll not even be able to sell this ?

The bearings of your cam look to be in very good shape, so you could have it reground instead of buying another one.

Reground to what? Can a cam shaft be re-profiled?

Yes, they can be, and are reprofiled if they are in good enough condition.

Can you recommend a machining company that could do this. Struggled to find any when I did a search.
I wonder if this could be re-profiled to an MD266, can’t we how myself as surely the 266 has more lift and would need longer lobes. But this is all out of my comfort zone!!

If you hold your cam up and look along it from the sprocket end, the tops of the lobes are the same height as the bearings.

They could be higher, as you suggest, but by grinding more metal off the back of the cam, it allows the cam follower to drop closer to the center line of the cam, so that as the cam is rotated, the follower has to rise more than before to get to the top of the lobe.

Your nearest camshaft wizzard is probably ACDodd

How much and what are the specs of the RS Cam? What would you compare it to MD266?
