Hello

How do I really identify what Mini model I have.

Book says it is a 1999 Mini 1.3

It's got loads of Cooper livery all over. How do I know whether it is actually a Cooper and/or Cooper S?

What do I look for?

Thank you

When you say “ book”, do you mean your V5.

Going off the date you give I would hazard a guess that it is a Sportspack Multi Point Injection. So will be a Mini Cooper

From 1996, when the Mpi was introduced, until end of production in 2000 Minis were all the same whether they were called Mini or Mini Cooper. It was mostly the paintwork, badging and interior finishing that determined what they were.

There was a Sports pack option with 13'' wheels and larger wheel arch extensions. This is sometimes mistakingly called a Cooper S.

The last factory-made Cooper Ss were 1971. Most of those were in kit form for export to overseas Leyland branches like Innocenti in Italy who had enough kits to keep them going for a few more years.

The Mini Cooper returned in 1990. A Cooper S re-emerged in 1991 (to 2000) but as initiative by John Cooper and as a conversion to a standard factory model. Those conversions will have an identifying plate screwed to the floor cross member just to the right of the driver's seat.

I think the people who own John Cooper S conversions from the 90s will argue their Rover approved (pretty sure?) Cooper S conversions are a little more than an “initiative”, even if they aren’t a factory S!

Yes, it is a Sportspack. But I wasn't sure if that was original as well. But are there any other 'things' that I could look for, to satisfy myself it really is a Cooper?

Wow !!

This is a great bit of info, thank you.

I was of the view that John Cooper introduced some modification to the Mini and those models with that mods were called Cooper.

What are those modifications?

Did the manufacturer subsequently incorporate these mods as standard in all models?

What is Cooper S? i.e  the difference between Cooper and Cooper S?

I may have worded my post badly. I have a Cooper S conversion and you are right, they were warranted by Rover. John and Mike Cooper took part in the very first meetings at Rover when the relaunch of the Mini Cooper was planned in 1990 and an S version was on the agenda. Some people argue that a conversion does not make a proper Cooper S but if John Cooper thought it did then that is good enough for me.
