Has the gear selector been stripped? the base plate may be on 180 degrees out.

Hi Guys

Heres a weird one for you. I have just rebuilt my rod change 4 syncro box and all went well.Checked it on the bench and all the gears went in ok by moving the selector rod by hand. Just put it back on the engine and now back in the car. Heres the strange thing - I have to lift the gear stick to get first and second 3rd and 4th ok but reverse goes straight in with out any lifting of the stick. There must be something 180 deg out . I checked the gear selector was the right way up and it is . Any ideas?

Did you strip the remote gear selector mechanism as well??? Maybe you put the bottom plate in the wrong way round. On that plate is the raised ledge which prevents it going into reverse unless you lift the gear lever.

Yep, from memory the hole should be at the front... if yours is at the front then put it to the back

This has just answered my question thanks, what’s the hole for anyway ? And how much grease should be in this thing, I’m currently stripping mine down and did wonder about that plate

at a guess, i'd say it's to drain/ventilate the inside of the shifter housing when water gets in there

another neat bit of design on the housing is the 'funnel' shape where the gear selector shaft goes in meaning there's a high probablity of water and general muck being forced in (..and any grease being washed out..) when driving in wet weather

shouldn't need huge amounts of grease - a liberal coating on all the moving parts should be sufficient.

worth considering replacing the bushes the shafts run in - especially the front one, and checking the main selector shaft for excessive wear where it runs in the bush

There was at one time, a boot that went on here to stop that

They are a DU Bush, not available as a spare part from Mini parts suppliers;-

However, most Bearing shops will have them.  I Have a P/N somewhere (or do a search), but the size is 0.005" ID x 0.600" OD x 0.500" L

i got mine from this site - i'm sure other sites stock them though

https://www.onlinebe...h-Imperial.html

Part number is:  08DU08  (1/2 x 19/32 x 1/2)

i didn't fancy my chances of being able to get the old ones out and new ones in without destroying the bushes or the housing so got the local machine shop to do them for me
