Hello - when applying my parking/emergency brake in a '65 countryman, the button at the end of the brake just sort of went limp and fell out. followed by the soft washer behind it. I can feel a spring in there directly now. but when i try to push the spring nothing seems to be happening. the brake now also wont' lock/engage, even if i try to sort of just hold the button in place. it is going up and down wihtout the need to hit a button. but when you pull it up, it also is not properly engaging, so the car can roll. just wondering if anyone knew what might have happened, how to fix it, or what i might need. thanks for your help!

I'd have a guess and say the rod inside that links the button to the Locking Pawl has rusted through. Not unusual as there's a felt also in there that holds mosture.

The easiest fix would be to get another Handbrake Lever. I'm not sure internal parts for these are available.
