First the Mini was reborn and now the Mk2 Ford Escort is also to be reborn!

"The Mk2 Ford Escort was a massive hit, especially amongst the rally fraternity, with prices predictably high for a solid, original two-door car – particularly the sporting versions. The likelihood of damage from competition means that replacement bodyshells have long been in demand, with replacement shells available from Motorsport Tools for several years now.
The project will take the form of a wide-arched Group 4 rally car, tested to IVA requirements so it can be registered for road use. Motorsport Tools has already built a rolling chassis, which now sits in GBS’s Nottingham workshop awaiting a 2.5-litre Duratec engine and Mazda six-speed manual gearbox. The braking set-up will feature be AP callipers, while ATR coil-overs will help keep it planted. A roll cage will be a standard feature on all builds, with luxuries like carpets and power steering optional. however.
The cars are expected to cost around £60,000, while hardly cheap, it compares favourably to other ‘reborn’ cars on the market. The first fully working prototype is expected to be ready in six months’ time."

Shame is not a MK1 as I have very fond memories of my 1969 car that is now probably ringed into a RS or Mexico as the plate is still on SORN and it`s not even registered as historic and the body was mint  !

Loved going everywhere sideways :)  I had quite a few MK2`s including an RS2000 for £300 in good nick.....ah those were the days, but I hold no affection for them as the lines of the MK1 were spot on in my mind

Given second hand prices, 60k is probably not too bad, certainly more sensible than the DB rubbish anyway.

How many cars can a manufacturer build under IVA before they need type approval?

My son has a 1978 Escort Mk.2 which started life as a LHD 1.3l, but is now a full-spec RHD RS2000 historic rally car with about 170 bhp and all the right bits. he bought it from a guy who was intending to put a Vauxhall 2.3 engine in, so he sold the Vauxhall engine and the gearbox it came with, then we got a Pinto lump which I built up for him. He did the rest of the work and it is surely a great car to drive and compete in. He even let me have a go in it!

He reckons it is worth around £25,000 or maybe a bit more, but it is an out-and-out rally car.
