Hi guys, my car has started rattling when I accelerate. This only happens in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The noise stops as soon as I change to 4th gear. Any idea what it could be? I've been told it's possibly the laygear, but I don't really know anything about gearboxes.

Attached is a recording of the sound its making. I was in 3rd gear going up a hill then change to 4th at the end and the noise goes away.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but it's a bit hard to make much out from your clip.

Given the description, it is most likely the Laygear and or Layshaft & Bearings.

Regardless, the engine will need to come out and the Gearbox removed from it.

I'd suggest, while you're that far in to it, to Overhaul the whole Gearbox as you'll likely find the rest isn't far behind this.

Thanks moke, its a shame considering the car only has 50,000 miles on the clock. Is there any way I can tell that this is the problem before pulling the engine?
