I wouldn't buy a 1380 anyway as they will never be useable unless liners are fitted

I would pass. if there is any issues with the bores then the only way to save it will be to have liners fitted.
If it was stupidly cheap then it may be worth a punt but with no receipts / history then you will be treading on very very thin ice.

Without traceable paperwork, I would but it's value is limited to an engine that would need a re-build.

How cheap is that. 500?
total max. i would not want to part with more than 200 as if the bores are worn and the crank has been reground a few times you ma just come away with a useable set of rods and a head. (you say engine not power unit so i am saying there is no gearbox or flywheel).

If it needs a re-bore it could mean a new block. To fit sleeves to a 1380 is not cheap and may not even be possible.
