My Mini, Gus is a 1992 and it drives me crackers.

It looks like 1992 was a crossover year for loads of things. And when he goes off for an MOT I’m likely to get asked where his catalytic converter is. He doesn’t have one. Poor Gus, brand new, was a basic cheapo Mini, the poor fella.

And when I’m looking up parts, nowhere seems to agree which parts are right.

Am I looking in the wrong places? Even just trying to identify the right water pump or oil filter seems befuddling.

So when I’m looking for stuff I start off with the best of intentions, get completely confused and end up doing nothing. :( I have no doubt it’s probably quite simple, but as I’m not that experienced to even know what I’m looking for.

Any tips for the hard of understanding?

:D

A 1992 carb car will have the spi type sub frame and places for additional relays on the bulkhead, the suspension etc is still the same as the earlier cars.

Your water pump can be a bypass or non bypass type (bypass type has the small hose going to the head from the top of the pump)

You haven't stated what model the car is so some basics first.

If it is a 998cc than its a late reg pre '92

If it is 1275 injected than it is a '92 Cooper.

If it is a 1275 Carb than as cal844 has said above the quickest way to ID the body is a row of relay mounting brackets to the left of the wiper motor which would make it '92 -on.

Some Lucas items like dizzy, wiper motor and starter have a four digit  date stamp on them.   42 91 would be week 42 1991.

Engine number may help.

A photo of the engine bay would help id the car fairly quick.

Adding to the above, if the door frames are original the door frames will be stamped with the week and year code. Also look for stickers on the wiring loom and rear lights

It is a 998, think it was a Mini City E. I’ll have a look for those numbers. :)

I've had loads of minis and they've all been parts of one year and parts of another! My SPI was a kind of preproduction MPI, my 1987 City E was as basic as a 70s car in places but more like a 90s version in others, the 1995 Mayfair we have now is an SPI but with a factory carb. Good old Rover, maybe that's why they are still such a thriving brand today!?

I hadn't realised the 998cc was continued up until November  of that year. This should be your car

If your looking for parts the   Mini 1992, 998cc     referance should get you exactly what you need

Try putting the engine number into the guessworks engine number decoder
