I have sourced a classic (probably 20+ years old now) Lumenition Optronic kit for my 998. My points are worn, and rather than get new points I'd like to use the Lumenition kit.

..But can I use my original coil (non-ballast) for it? it is a 1977 A 998ccm.

These are great units, I've used a lot of them in the days before we could get the small modules that are available today.

 

They can handle Coil Currents up to 7 amps, so allowing for a margin here check the resistance of your Coil, you want 2.0 ohms or more.

i have a couple of these knocking about used the medern electronic ignition dizzys and the retro fit modules but never actually used the lumination ones

I used them on an Escort 2 based kit car 30 years ago. It used Ballasted ignition.

I had much better reliability with Magnetronic. The Lumenition failed twice in about 10000 miles. Lumenition replaced them, but I would rather the unit had not failed in the first place.

Lumenition optronic on my mini is 30+ years old, its paired with a lucas sports coil of similar vintage.

yes, std coil would be alright. But coils deteriorate with age. I went for a Lucas DLB105 but similar non-resistance coils are okay.

Thanks for your replies - did clean it a bit today, and found a broken wire that needs to be replaced -but nothing major. :) I'll have to measure the current coil I have.

 

As for reliability - I have had my mini for 6 years now - never adjusted the points, or had any issues with the original ignition (touch wood!!).

 

Where can I find wiring diagram for the lumenition?
