Hi, I recently had the head off did all the porting ect, have put it back together with 1.5 rockers set gaps to 15thou as advised but have one really noisy tappet. Oil is good, rockers are on properly so the oil channel is working.

Anyone got ideas what to check next?

If the 1.5 rockers were second hand then the rocker shaft could be worn.

as suggested above the rockers could be touching the cover.

so does it make the noise with the cover off?

it would leave marks if they were fouling the lid right?

As Nick has suggested run the engine with the cover off for a few minutes.. oil will NOT be splattered all over the place while you do this.. if its still noisey put a long screwdriver on a non moveable part of the rocker gear near each moveable rocker with your ear near the handle end of the screwdriver, and you should be able to narrow down which rocker is likely to be making the noise

So noticed the tappet is pretty quite when i start the engine then grows louder as the engine warms up, would suggest a tight tolerance sopmewhere that's only causing noise as metal expands right?

it's definitely not the rocker box as the noise is there with this removed, it's coming from valves 8 & 1 but i redid the gaps and pretty sure they're right (having redone them about 100 times already)

possible cam issues maybe?

If you grab the 1 and 8 rocker when its at TDC and you would normally adjust each one, can you twist it from left to right or indeed pull it left to right... noisey 1 and 8 would suggest badly shimmed / spaced rockers at the end of the shaft allowing them to float up and down the shaft a bit (If that makes sense)

Hey Noobies I think you might be right there's definitely lateral movement on 8, although there's no noise from 1 at all, so add some shims, you think that can be done without the assembly coming off?

Depends I think on what side you need to shim.. If its between the split pin washer and rocker then use you can do it in situ.. if you need to shim the other side of the rocker (if you get my drift) the rocker would need to slide off the shaft and to do that you would need to release the push rod from the rocker.... you may be lucky and have just enough adjustment there to fully loosen the rocker ball... remove the nut totally and fully unscrew the adjuster and see if the ball pops out off the push rod. I wouldn't leaver the push rod though tempting as this may be or you might bend it
